Canadian rider Mathias Guillemette of our Devo Team powered to his first UCI road race victory in Stage 2 of the Tour Alsace, a prestigious race on the UCI 2.2 calendar. The stage, which ran from Europa-Park to Sélestat, was expected to end in a bunch sprint — and the team executed the plan to perfection.

After a strong start to the race with a 6th-place finish in the team time trial-style prologue, Stage 2 presented an opportunity for the sprinters. The breakaway went early, but our team kept things under control, maintaining a high tempo throughout the day. In the final kilometers, the squad worked seamlessly to position Mathias for the sprint.

Mathias: “The race was fast as we expected, with the breakaway going right off after 2-3km. Then the race was quite controlled at a fast pace but the fight for the top teams was hard. We were really good at staying in the bubble and saving energy all day.

With about 20 kilometers to go, our team moved together on the left side of the road to gradually bring back the break, which we caught with around 7 kilometers remaining. The final kilometers were hectic - we got a bit caught out by a surge from the bunch, but I managed to find my position again with 600 meters to go and launched my sprint at the right moment.”

Guillemette’s powerful sprint not only secured the stage win but also earned him crucial bonus seconds, putting him into the overall lead in the General Classification.

The Tour d’Alsace continues today with a challenging mountain top finish on La Planche des Belles Filles — a pivotal stage for the GC contenders.
