Memorial Marco Pantani was set for 195.7 km in Emilia Romagna and featured 3 circuits: the first for 85km into the race, the second ending with 40km to go before entering the flat city circuit in Cesenatico.
It was in the second circuit that a breakaway formed, including 15 riders and our Michael Storer. With 35km to go, the Australian climber managed to escape on the lead with Natnael Tesfatsion (Movistar).
They collaborated well together, each doing their share of the work to build a significant gap on their chasers.
In the final local circuit, with 3.6 km to go, the Australian attacked and managed to drop Tesfatsion.
Storer finished the race with an impressive solo effort, claiming another great victory on Italian soil and home roads: “It looks like Italy is bringing me luck this year. We really wanted to win with the team today after a good week, but we had to figure out how to beat Del Toro, seeing his top shape at the moment. Our DS made a tactic that we perfectly followed.”
